Mayan Jaguar
by Cathy Carey
After our trip to Cancun I set out to do a painting of the jungle. I loved the foliage, flowers, birds and the Mayan history we encountered in places like Tulum. We had been on several explorations through the jungle and I did sketches and drawings to use on a painting at home. I fashioned the jaguar on the stylized images of jaguars in Mayan books, like the Codex Nuttall. The bird in the upper left is a Quetzal, a bird found in the Yucatan jungles. When I posted pics on Facebook of this painting in progress, I got so much feedback it was amazing, people loved this crazy cat! The jaguar certainly took on a life of his own!
