Joyous Spring
by Cathy Carey
Yet another in the Matisse window series! Here I also used some of my memories of a Virginia botanical garden with ponds and beautiful Iris and Tulips. To achieve just the right effect I looked at some Monet ponds, and tried to channel the master with my use of his cool light. Off to the right the chartreuse window pane is a complement that gives the calm, cool waters energy and life force. One of the color theory lessons I learned looking at Monet paintings, is the way he paired complements; warm against cool, light against dark and brilliant against neutral. As your eye moves through this painting, notice how everything is paired with an opposite. The wiggly organic wallpaper is my homage to Matisse as well as the motif of the open window.
